Rizzo Rises To No. 6 All-Time With 1,000-Meter Victory

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Matt Rizzo of Bronxville ran No. 6 all-time 2:24.06 to win the 1,000 meters and Katelyn Tuohy was a double winner Saturday at the New York indoor state meet at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.

Rizzo's time moves him to No. 2 on the list this season, behind Matthew Payamps of St. Anthony's, who ran 2:23.46 against pros a week earlier at the Toyota USATF Indoor Championsips.

Payamps took the New York state title Saturday in the 1,600, using a big kick to pull away from Rizzo's brother, Alex, 4:10.51 to 4:13.21.

Tuohy of North Rockland won the 3,000 meters Saturday morning in 9:15.35. She won by 27 seconds and was followed by a pack of seven runners who broke 9:50. Tuohy came back later to claim the 1,500 in 4:24.01.

The Ursuline School girls, led by sisters Sarah Flynn and Lily Flynn, won the 4x800 relay with a US#3 time of 9:07.89. Lily Flynn also prevailed in the 1,000 (2:50.91) to repeat as champion.

Shea Weilbaker of Saratoga Springs won the boys 3,200 in 9:04.62.

Kevon O'Brien Smith of Freeport won the boys 600 in a US#3 time of 1:19.98.

Christopher Columbus duo Anthony Brodie and Rashaun Stewart went 1-2 in the 300, clocking 34.16 and 34.74 seconds, respectively.

Michael Bayley of Victor Central (7.44) edged out Mount Sinai's Kenneth Wei (7.45) to win the 55-meter hurdles. Wei pulled out a win in the long jump, going 23-5.50 to win by a quarter inch over Jeremiah Willis of CNS.

It was one of two near-misses for Willis.

Jadan Hanson of Uniondale won a very close competition with Willis to win the boys triple jump, but just by an inch -- 49-7.50 to 49-6.50.

Indya Richards of Gates-Chili (7.87) won the girls 55-meter hurdles. She attempted to win the 55 dash as well, but pulled up mid-race and did not finish.

Toshel Goffe of Paul Robeson (7.10) was the fastest girl in the 55 dash, while Lavonno Mitchell of Albertus Magnus was the fastest boy (6.40).

U.S. weight throw leader Monique Hardy from Webster Thomas won the state title with a toss of 60-4.75. She also won the shot put (42-8.50).

Alissa Braxton jumped 40-5 to win the triple jump.

Will Gross of St. Joseph's Collegiate threw 69-5.50 to win the boys weight throw. Jonathan Surdej of Lancaster Central won the shot put with 61-2.75.

Seventh-grader Jada Kenner from Tapestry Charter won the girls title in the 300, running 39.24.

The Huntington boys won the 4x400 relay title in 3:20.17 and did it the hard way -- from the first race in a two-section final.
